Off-duty fire chief saves man’s life in grocery store
OAK GROVE, Ore. – Clackamas Fire District #1 Division Chief Bill Conway saved a man’s life at the Oak Grove Grocery Outlet Saturday.
According to the fire district, Conway was in the right place at the right time.
He was shopping with his wife at the Grocery Outlet on Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard when he heard someone crash to the floor.
While store employees called 911, Conway checked on the person who fell and found him unconscious and not breathing.
Conway performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
Medics used a defibrillator on the patient twice and he regained a pulse.
The fire district said the patient was transported to the hospital and is doing well.
Conway serves as the fire district’s emergency medical services chief.
He says he hopes everyone learns how to do CPR.
"So what I did was what I expect our citizens to do," he says. "Hands-only CPR is so easy to learn, and it provides the vital oxygen to the brain and the heart, and the vital organs long enough for our advanced life support to arrive."
