Portland police said a young woman was critically injured in a stabbing Friday afternoon, and a suspect has been arrested.

Police responded to the incident just before 4 p.m. at the Lloyd Center MAX platform.

They said the suspect and the victim, who police said was in her late teens or early 20s, appeared to not know each other. Police said the suspect came up to her and after a few words were exchanged, stabbed her multiple times. The victim was with two other young women.

Police found and arrested the suspect near the DoubleTree Hotel, which is across the street from the MAX platform. They said they found a knife at the scene.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for traumatic injuries. Police said she is expected to survive.

Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Christopher Eugene Woods. He was taken to the Multnomah County Jail where he faces charges of second-degree assault and menacing.

His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
