Police identify driver in deadly shooting, car crash in Portland's Old Town District

PORTLAND, Ore. – A man was shot and killed last Thursday night while driving in Portland’s Old Town District, Portland Police said.

The driver, identified Monday as 40-year-old Desmond Garrett of Portland, ended up crashing his Mercury sedan into a Ford pickup near the intersection of NW 5th Avenue and Everett Street.

Police investigators said they believe the shooting happened a block away on NW 6th Avenue. Witnesses said they heard the gunshots, saw the Mercury drive off and crash into a small power box before hitting the pickup.

Bystanders started CPR, however arriving paramedics pronounced Garrett deceased.

The driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital with some minor injuries.

Investigators said they found bullet casings and damage to buildings on NW 6th Avenue between Flanders and Everett Streets.
