Police: Man arrested for turning on water faucets in SE Portland, causing $50K in damage
Police arrested a man suspected in a string of incidents that caused thousands of dollars in damage to homes in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood of Southeast Portland.
Officers got a call about a naked man turning on a water faucet on Southeast Holly Street and 4:15 AM Friday. Police say the caller told officers he believed the man was responsible for dozens of similar incidents in the area.
Police set up a perimeter and arrested 30-year-old Moyhijah Widger-Chongo.
Investigators say Widger-Chongo is suspected of vandalizing more than 40 homes and causing nearly $50,000 in damage.
Widger-Chongo is accused of turning on exterior water faucets at homes in the neighborhood and leaving them running, which flooded basements of some homes.
Police say he was also linked to a May burglary.
Widger-Chongo was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on 14 felony and misdemeanor crimes. Upon lodging Widger-Chongo at the Multnomah County Jail, officers requested that mental health services contact and assess him.
