Police search for driver who crashed into Burnside 26 apartment building

PORTLAND, Ore. – A driver crashed onto a sidewalk and hit an apartment building in Northeast Portland early Thursday morning.

It happened just after 1:30 a.m. at Northeast 26th Avenue and East Burnside Street at the Burnside 26 apartments.

Police say the driver of the 2010 silver Mercedes fled the scene after the crash and they are searching for him.

The driver also hit a sign that went through the window of the car.

Witnesses told police the driver was speeding eastbound on East Burnside Street before he crashed into the building.

Police say there was a passenger in the vehicle. The passenger was carried to a nearby apartment, but refused to go to the hospital.
