A stunning report released earlier this week, which showed obesity-related cancers way up in younger people, has caused a Portland doctor to issue an urgent warning.

"This is a very shocking report," said Dr. John Godwin of the Providence Cancer Center. "I think it should catch everybody's attention."

According to the analysis published in The Lancet Public Health, a disturbing trend was noticed in adults age 24 to 49. Obesity-related cancers were seen in increased levels in those people.

"This is showing us that these cancers that are associated with obesity are occurring at younger and younger ages," said Godwin.

Godwin believes the study shows a need to address the obesity epidemic immediately.

"I think people are having a conversation now about the opioid epidemic, but just as important is the obesity epidemic that's happening in this country," he said.
