Portland increases rates for trash pickup to cover costs of sorting recyclables

PORTLAND, Ore. – Garbage services will cost a little more money for Portland residents after city councilors voted Wednesday to increase rates.

The change in price for residential garbage, recycling and compost service is from the higher costs associated with sorting recyclables which are then sent overseas to countries like China, who recently tightened regulations on what gets imported.

The average Portland household can expect to pay another $2.55 a month.

That new rate goes into effect May 1, and the city will re-evaluate the rate next spring.
