Portland is worst city for women in tech: Study
A study released last month says Portland is the worst city for women in tech due to a pay gap between genders, paired with the lack of women in the business.
Out of 58 cities analyzed by the site Tech.co, Washington, DC came in first and Portland came in last.
Portland had a gender pay gap of 80.1 percent and only 24 percent of tech jobs filled by women, while DC had a gender pay gap of 99.3 percent and 40.4 percent of tech jobs filled by women.
Our neighbors to the north didn't fare much better -- Seattle came in at #39, with an 80.4 percent gender pay gap and 20.8 percent of tech jobs filled by women.
The national average is a pay gap of 86.7 percent and 26.5 percent of tech jobs filled by women.
KATU News spoke with one woman in Portland who's working to change the disparity between men and women in the tech industry.
Megan Bigelow co-founded the group PDX Women in Tech four years ago. The group gives women in the industry a place to go for support and encouragement.
"We tend to think we need to be 150 percent qualified to do something even though you don't need to do that," said Bigelow. "It's okay if you're 80 percent, right? Don't be intimidated by a job posting that says you need 15 years of experience."
