PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) -- Portland Police declared a gathering that began in Ventura Park a riot just after 9 p.m. on Saturday night. Police later used tear gas for the first time in weeks to disperse the crowd.
Officers arrested 59 people overnight on charges ranging from disorderly conduct and riot to assaulting a public safety officer, police officials said.
Police said that people in the crowd were throwing Molotov cocktails and at least one community member was injured.
Witness video and our crews saw a man catching on fire from what appeared to a Molotov cocktail being thrown, but it is unclear whether that was the community member that Portland Police mentioned.
The crowd of protesters gathered in Ventura Park at around 7 p.m. with plans to march down to the Portland Police east precinct.
Authorities announced at around 9 p.m. that people who were planning to march to the east precinct building were not staying to the sidewalks and that the march was unpermitted.
A few minutes later, police declared the gathering a riot, saying that people on SE Stark Street were engaging in "tumultuous and violent conduct."
Our crew at the scene saw fireworks being set off and several people being taken into custody at the scene.
Police followed groups of protesters around the southeast section of the city, blocking them from getting to the east precinct, until they faced off near the park they first started at.
To break up the gathering, Portland police use tear gas for the first time in weeks.
Speakers who addressed the crowd before the riot was declared say while 100 nights is a milestone, they won’t be stopping anytime soon.

"We been doing this for a long time. The faces change, the tactics change-- all different things change. The revolution has just been living and breathing since colonialism started," the speaker, who was not identified, said. "I say that we have to stop reacting to revolution as if it’s new."
Portland Police officials said several officers were hit by rocks during the protest. A commercial grade firework also reportedly burned though one officer's glove, injuring his hand.
