Portland police investigate fatal shooting outside strip club, one person in custody
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Police Bureau is investigating a fatal shooting outside a strip club in Southeast Portland Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to a report of a disturbance and shooting at the intersection of Southeast 160th Avenue and Southeast Stark Street, near Dream On Saloon, at 2:33 a.m.
While officers responded to the scene, a 911 caller said a private security guard at the strip club shot a man. The caller said two men had approached the security guard in the parking lot, which led to a disturbance. The security guard reportedly shot one of the men, and then both men ran south from the building.
When officers arrived, they found the injured man nearby and treated him. He was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. He later died at the hospital.
"The information that I have is that the saloon was closed. It was shortly after closing and this happened in the parking lot," said Portland police Lt. Tina Jones.
The Oregon Liquor Control Commission says the Dream On Saloon was under an OLCC order to employ a full-time security guard for the property because of past problems associated with the strip club.
"It looks like they had a prior violation," said OLCC spokesman Matthew Van Sickle. "They had a prior shooting that happened late last year. And the establishment is on what we call an enforceable control plan which mandates a couple things, one of which is to have a DPSST trained security guard at all times."
Van Sickle said that order was in place before another deadly incident outside the Dream On Saloon in November.
On Nov. 15, 26-year-old Edward Taylor was shot and killed on the sidewalk outside the business. A second man was wounded in the shooting but survived.
Portland police said they know of no connections between the November shooting and the shooting Tuesday morning.
Mark Russell is outreach director for the Victory Recovery Center across the street from the strip club.
"Not that much of a shock," said Russell. "There's been a lot of violence that goes on in this area too. A lot of problems with gangs. A lot of people with problems with drugs and prostitution and so there's a lot of issues that need to be confronted as well too."
The second man involved was arrested and the security guard is cooperating with police.
Police closed a portion of Southeast 160th Avenue during the investigation.
Portland Police Bureau is working with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office and the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office to investigate the incident.
Police say more information on the man's identity will be released after an autopsy is performed and next of kin are notified.
