PORTLAND, Ore. – About 11,000 students in the Portland metro area now have backpacks full of school supplies, thanks to a project put together by Schoolhouse Supplies, Comcast, and a team of hard-working volunteers.

"Kids can't do their job of learning if they don't have the tools they need in school," said Alice Forbes, the Executive Director of Schoolhouse Supplies.

KATU’s Genevieve Reaume joined the volunteer team Thursday at Caesar Chavez Elementary in North Portland as they handed off the colorful backpacks filled with all sorts of goodies.

Schoolhouse Supplies hosts similar giveaways all over Portland and Hillsboro.

"I have goosebumps,” said Amy Keiter, director of external communications at Comcast. “This is really, it's just an amazing thing. It just feels so good to be a part of this."
