Protest against natural gas pipeline staged outside Chase Bank in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. – A controversial pipeline proposal sparked a protest outside Chase Bank in Downtown Portland on Monday.
Demonstrators said Chase Bank is the only American bank supporting a gas pipeline to Coos Bay. They also say the bank is behind the newest version of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, and is pressuring federal regulators to block a climate impact study.
The solution, they say, is having people move money to other banks.
"This bank is contributing in huge ways to environmental destruction, and for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, for the sake of life on earth in the future, we think you ought to think about moving that money," said Michael Hall of 350 PDX.
In a statement, Chase Bank told us it tries to balance environmental issues with financial considerations.
Protesters in Seattle held a protest with a similar message on Monday.
