Salem police say a woman found dead in a hotel room Tuesday night was killed and they have arrested a suspect in the case.

Officers responded to the Days Inn Black Bear Inn at 1600 Motor Court Northeast around 10:50 p.m. to perform a welfare check on a guest staying at the inn.

Police knocked on the door, but did not get a response from the guest. They entered the room and found a woman deceased on the floor.

"Well, it was quiet. I really didn't know that anything was going on," said motel guest Don Bodin. "I was up at 11 o'clock just getting ready to go to bed and I looked out the window and I saw a police car come in. And he didn't come back out. I figured it was just normal stuff around here. I've noticed since I've been here that it's kinda crazy around here. And so I just went to bed, woke up this morning and they're still here."

Police said they have tentatively identified the woman but have not released her name, as they are still in the process of notifying her family.

Salem police said they worked with police in Independence to identify 25-year-old Cody Roy Hilliard as the suspect in the killing. Oregon State police found him just after 9 a.m. Wednesday driving on Interstate 5 near Eugene.

Police arrested Hilliard. He was booked in the Marion County Jail on charge of murder,

According to court records, Hilliard has several felony theft and drug arrests in Polk County and had an outstanding felony arrest warrant for unlawful use of a vehicle, first-degree theft, identity theft and first-degree forgery at the time of his arrest for murder.
