Sheriff's deputy shot in Cowlitz County

A Cowlitz County sheriff's deputy has died in the hospital after he was shot on a rural road outside Kalama, Wash.

Authorities are still searching for the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting.

On Sunday afternoon, the sheriff's office identified the deceased as 29-year-old Justin DeRosier.

A sheriff's deputy was shot near Kalama in connection to an incident on Kalama River Road Saturday, according to Cowlitz County records.

The deputies condition is unknown.


Life Flight confirmed it was called to respond to Kalama River Road Saturday night.

There was a large police presence at a staging area off Kalama River Road. Deputies told drivers to turn around a few miles east off the I-5 Interstate exit.

Law enforcement from agencies across southwest Washington were in the area to assist. A law enforcement chaplain showed up to the staging area at around midnight.
