MADRAS, Ore. - The pilot of a small airplane died Saturday in a crash about a mile south of Madras in the Willow Creek Canyon area, Jefferson County officials said.

Emergency responders reached the plane from the south side of the canyon and found the wreckage engulfed in flames.

Investigators have not released the name of the pilot.

Official say that the fire resulting from the wreck is not a threat to the area.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Fire, Jefferson County EMS, Oregon State Police and Madras Police all responded to the scene.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to Madras this weekend, and a large viewing area has been set up at the Madras airport, near where the crash occurred.

*Editor's note: An initial report from the sheriff's office said that a passenger also died in the crash. Officials later corrected this information to say that there was no passenger on board.
