Next year, some Oregon prisons are going to start receiving their shipments on cardboard pallets instead of wooden ones.

The Department of Corrections is exploring a pilot program that could have a huge economic and environmental impact on the state.

Traditional cardboard shipping pallets weigh about a fifth as much as their wooden counterparts. Less weight means trucks use less fuel while transporting them, which means fewer emissions.

"This is one of the things that we can do, a very simple switch taht would immediately reduce carbon emissions on a massive scale," Tim Perry with Change the Pallet said.

Ikea made the switch to cardboard pallets back in 2012 and has reduced annual emissions by 75,000 metric tons, saving hundreds of millions of dollars.
