Sunset HS baseball team honors former grad, U.S. Army specialist who died in Afghanistan
BEAVERTON, Ore. – Sunset High School is holding a special memorial baseball game Wednesday to honor an alumnus who was killed while fighting overseas.
Specialist John Pelham died while serving in Afghanistan in February 2014.
When Pelham was younger he spent six-months in the Oregon Youth Challenge Program run by the National Guard.
Pelham's father says his son excelled in the program, and he then went on to play baseball at Sunset High School and again in college.
Eventually decided the military was his true calling. Pelham worked as an intelligence analyst, but the details of his work are classified.
Each year since his death, the Sunset HS team holds a special game in his honor.
“The gratitude for Sunset High School and for the effort they put forth the last few years to honor our son and take care of his legacy,” said John’s father, Wendell Pelham. “We all know that the legacies only die when we’ve stopped talking about them, when we stop doing things in honor of our American heroes."
Specialist John Pelham served with the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Special Forces Group in the U.S. Army.
