Teens from Northwest Academy win prestigious innovation award
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Two Portland high schoolers are getting a jump start on their careers and taking home a prestigious prize for innovation.
Sarah Hatcher, 18, and Jared Kerman, 17, go to Northwest Academy, an independent arts and college prep school.
This week they learned they've been named Oregon winners of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which is widely considered the world's most prestigious youth competition for a water-related science project.
The pair won the award for coming up with a way to use algae to assess water quality in the Pacific Northwest.
