The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday it will launch a formal investigation into the capsizing of a fishing vessel last week that left three men dead.

The Dungeness crab fishing boat Mary B II capsized in 12- to 14-foot seas while crossing the Yaquina Bay bar Tuesday night, Jan. 8. All three men onboard -- James Lacey, 48, Joshua Porter, 50 and Stephen Biernacki, 50 -- died.

Cmdr. Karen Denny, the executive officer of Marine Safety Unit Portland, will lead the investigation.

After she finishes the investigation, the Coast Guard said Denny will release her findings, which will include any possible ways to improve safety.
