Driver arrested after blind man struck, killed in North Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. - A blind man was struck and killed by a driver Monday morning while in a crosswalk at a North Portland intersection, police officials said.
According to officers, the pedestrian was hit at about 6:15 a.m. when 34-year-old Ryan Gawick ran a red light at the intersection of North Columbia Boulevard and North Interstate Place.
He died in the hospital shortly after the crash.
Gawick was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of Criminally Negligent Homicide.
Initial reports say the man was in a crosswalk when the collision occurred. It was less than an hour before sunrise.
Police say Gawick stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Police will release the name of the victim once family members have been notified of his death.
Police closed down Columbia Boulevard for several hours to investigate the crash.
