In honor of Veterans Day volunteers showed up at the Red Cross on Friday to help pack comfort kits for veterans in need.

From the beginning of the month, Red Cross locations in Portland and Vancouver have been collecting items for veterans.

On Friday, volunteers went to the Red Cross headquarters on North Vancouver Avenue in Portland.

The kits are packed with toiletries and other essential items, like gloves and grocery gift cars.

“It’s nice to be able to give time and give something to the less fortunate,” said volunteer Leeann Banning.”

The Red Cross says last year it packed a thousand comfort kits to give to veterans in need throughout the year.
