WW: 'It happened here'
It has been almost 30 years since an Ethiopian immigrant named Mulugeta Seraw was killed by three racist skinheads in Southeast Portland.
It's a story that's hard to forget if you were around Portland in the late 1980s.
Three men pleaded guilty to the attacks but then civil rights watchdogs sued Tom Metzger, a California white supremacist leader. They argued the skinheads were incited by Metzger's rhetoric.
The whole saga left people in Portland with a lot of questions, like how much responsibility should be placed on those not directly involved in the attack?
They’re questions that seem awfully familiar today.
It is the cover story of the latest edition of Willamette Week, detailing the Seraw killing and the impact on our city.
WW news editor Aaron Mesh joined KATU’s Steve Dunn in the studio Wednesday to talk about it.
