California Highway Patrol: Hours-old baby girl found in middle of road
A newborn baby was found alone in the middle of the road, the California Highway Patrol says.
According to CHP, a newspaper delivery person found the baby girl in the road wearing pajamas just before 4 a.m. Monday.
Emergency crews took the baby to Valley Children's Hospital. The hospital says the baby was only 6-8 hours old.
CHP says hospital staff estimates the baby was out in the area of Avenue 13 1/2 between Road 35 and 36 in Madera Ranchos for less than a half hour. The temperature was near freezing at the time.
The pastor at Madera Ranchos Assembly of God said the baby was found right across the road from the church.
Valley Children's Hospital says the baby is in very good condition.
The investigation has been handed over to the Madera County Sheriff's Office, CHP says.
It is legal to take unwanted babies to approved fire stations in California, and there was a fire station about one mile from where the baby was found. Hospitals are also safe surrender sites.
