Convicted child molester beaten to death in California prison, officials say
KERN COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26) — A man who was a convicted child molester was beaten to death in Wasco State Prison, prison officials say.
It happened around 7:20 p.m. Saturday in the day room on Facility B.
According to Wasco State Prison officials, an alarm was sounded after 19-year-old inmate Andres Ayon began punching 66-year-old inmate Agustin Duran in the face and upper torso.
Prison officials say Ayon was placed in handcuffs and taken to a temporary holding cell. Duran was placed on a gurney and transported to a hospital.
At 8:23 p.m., prison officals say Duran was airlifted to an outside hospital. He was declared dead at 4:48 p.m. on Sunday.
Prison officials say Ayon was brought into custody on June 22 to serve six years for second-degree robbery and use of a deadly weapon.
Duran was brought to Wasco State Prison on July 2 to serve 55 years to life with the possibility of parole for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old.
The primary mission of Wasco State Prison is to provide short-term housing necessary to process, classify and evaluate new inmates physically and mentally to determine their security level, program requirements, and appropriate institutional placement. The prison was activated in 1991 and houses about 4,900 inmates and employs approximately 1,500 people.
