Some of the new Democrats in Congress are making a shift further left

WASHINGTON (SBG) - New House member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has only been on the job for a few weeks and is already challenging how the establishment on the Hill gets things done.

With the election of 40 new Democrats to the house, a portion of the democratic party appears to be shifting left.

“I definitely feel the party is going in a much more progressive,” said Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla.

A new face of that progressive wing is self- declared Democratic Socialist New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“I think Rep. Ocasio Cortez is doing an incredible job, and I’m lucky to call her a friend and a colleague and partner with her on the green new deal and other important progressive policies,” Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Co.

Former Democrat turned Independent Joe Lieberman says Ocasio-Cortez is not the future of the party, but others disagree.

“I don’t think we should really take direction from Joe Lieberman who was a former Democrat and is now supporting Republican candidates,” Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich.

One House Democrat we spoke to says Ocasio-Cortez is a novelty right now, but maybe her 15 minutes of fame could be up soon. Meanwhile, House leadership including House Speaker Pelosi say they are embracing new and fresh ideas.

“I welcome a big tent party, and I think we need to continue to learn from one another,” Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M.

“There’s nothing wrong with having debates, I’m thrilled that she’s here,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, D- Mass.

According to a recent Gallup Poll for the first time since 1994 a majority Democrats now identify as liberal rather than moderate or conservative.

“I really do see that a lot of these ideas that people talk about today that people say are radical and not mainstream, give it 10-20 years and I think it’s just going to be humdrum,” Frankel said.

And for Ocasio-Cortez she could just be ahead of the game.
