HOUSTON, Texas (WKRC) - A Texas teen was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a potentially deadly disease after hitting the gym too hard, according to a story by KTRK.

Jared Shamburger, 17, was hospitalized for five days with Rhabdomyolysis, a disease that causes a breakdown of muscle tissue, releasing a damaging protein into the blood, possibly damaging the kidneys.

Rhabdo can be caused by many things including injury, infection, and overexertion.

Muscle pain, weakness and severe swelling after intense exercise are the warning signs that you may need to be checked out by a doctor.

The key is getting the disease diagnosed and treated right away.

Fortunately for Jared, he made it to the hospital in time and is expected to make a full recovery.
