New data shows top dog names of 2017

Gone are the days of dogs named Rover and Spot. Newly released data from reveals the top male and female dog names of 2017. dug into their database and found dog names are now inspired by modern television shows and iconic figures.

The data shows the top 10 male dog names are:

  2. Charlie
  3. Cooper
  4. Buddy
  5. Jack
  6. Rocky
  7. Oliver
  8. Bear
  9. Duke
  10. Tucker

The top 10 female dog names are:

  1. Bella
  2. Lucy
  3. Daisy
  4. Luna
  5. Lola
  6. Sadie
  7. Molly
  8. Maggie
  9. Bailey
  10. Sophie said names of powerful women or female characters are becoming more popular. They saw an increase in popularity in dogs with the names Oprah, Madonna, and Katniss.

One interesting statistic correlates with the release of the hit show “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The name Atwood is up 200 percent.

The show “Stranger Things” is also playing a role in the name game. The name Barb is up 182 percent and the name Eleven is up 166 percent.

Game of Thrones-themed names also continued trending. Owners have been naming their pets Khaleesi, Snow, Arya, Jamie and Sansa. says they’ve also seen a trend in ‘90s-related pet names.

Dogs named Nirvana grew 171 percent and the trend of naming dogs after the Spice Girls continues.

Overall, the numbers show 8 percent of dog names are pop culture-influenced.
