LYONS, Ore. — While the impeachment hearings play out on the world stage, President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign was in the small town of Lyons, Ore., on Wednesday.
It was the first time the president paid any real attention to a state he lost in 2016.
Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law and senior adviser, along with campaign anager Brad Parscale, may have been in Oregon for the first time, but they hinted it might not be the last.
“Oregon’s budget in the 2016 campaign, as a person that was in charge of the state budget, was zero dollars and zero cents,” Parscale said. “We were not looking at Oregon. But now we’re here. We’re already spending money.”
In an effort to secure a second term, the president’s posse is engaging a new audience. Wednesday’s topic: Timber.
The two toured the Freres Lumber Company and hosted a listening session in Lyons.
“We don’t have timber. We don’t have jobs. We don’t have schools. We don’t have storefronts. We don’t have 7-Elevens,” said Oregon state Rep. Sherrie Sprenger, a Republican who represents District 17, which encompasses portions of Linn and Marion counties.
“So many people here today, I think, said that: we felt like people had forgotten about us in Oregon. We haven’t. The president hasn’t,” said Trump.
A few participants on the panel told KATU after the listening session that with Trump and Parscale in Oregon, they felt heard.
As far as President Trump coming to Oregon, Lara Trump said nothing’s planned yet, but it’s not off the table.
