Your Voice, Your Vote: Portland's new ordinance requiring tenant relocation assistance

The City of Portland is taking steps to protect renters with a new ordinance, however two landlords have already filed a lawsuit challenging the decision.

One tenant advocate believes the ordinance requiring landlords to pay for tenants' relocation costs in no-cause evictions or rent increases may help control rising rents.

“It's essentially asking landlords to acknowledge the cost of displacement by shifting that burden to them,” said Margot Black the founder of Portland Tenants United. “They're going to be thinking a lot more about whether to raise the rent as much as they are.”
