Your Voice, Your Vote: What's the future of western wildfires?

Several western states saw devastating wildfire seasons in 2017, including dozens of massive fires in Oregon and Washington.

In Oregon, several wildfires are continuing to burn, including the more than 48,800-acre Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia River Gorge.

Most recently in the headlines are the deadly blazes in California that have demolished thousands of homes and businesses.

With so much devastation from fires in the west, what kind of assistance can we expect from the federal government? Also, what can lawmakers do to help prevent future massive wildfires?

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley sat down with KATU’s Lincoln Graves to discuss what is being done in Washington D.C. on the wildfire front.

Congressman Kurt Schrader also joined KATU’s Angelica Thornton to discuss the future of forest management.
