Christmas shopping with the Winterhawks: 'My favorite present ever'
The Winterhawks are having a great season at 14-4 and they are also making the Holiday Season great for two dozen area children.
On Tuesday, 'Hawks players took time to shop for toys at the Hollywood Fred Meyer with children of Boys and Girls Club.
“Unbelievable,” says Left Winger Kieffer Bellows, “it just kind of warms your heart, brings a brightness to your day, you know, just seeing how excited a kid can get about something so little, just something that makes them happy. Puts a smile on their face, it just kind of reflects on you as well. You get a smile on your face.”
It brings back memories of holidays past and favorite Christmas gifts.
“I got a BMX bike when I was in grade five,” says 'Hawks Goalie Cole Kehler, “and I rode that thing everywhere. That was by far and away my favorite present ever.”
The Winterhawks, the Hawks Booster Club, Fred Meyer and the Portland Police Bureau’s Sunshine Division teamed up to make it a special Christmas season for the youngsters. The Winterhawks Booster Club donated $100 for each child to spend. The event was billed as “Shop With A Hawk.”
The time buying presents had the players almost as excited as the kids at times.
“Oh yeah, the little kid in me comes back once in a while,” says Hawks Defenseman, Keoni Texeira, adding, “I’m like, that’s really cool, I wish I had that growing up, but it’s awesome to see how excited they get over this stuff.”
